Separating from your partner can be an extremely traumatic experience, not only for the parties involved but also for any children of the relationship.

Overview

Any Family Law dispute where the parties are married is regulated by the Family Law Act 1975. This Act also regulates disputes involving children of the relationship, even if the parties are not married. Property and other financial disputes of partners that are not married and who separated before the 1st March 2009 and who are resident in New South Wales are regulated by the Property (Relationships) Act 1984. De Facto couples who separate after the 1st March 2009 are now dealt with under the Family Law Act 1975. These couples could also include same sex couples.
